Expanding Your Practice:
Regulatory Negotiation: (Offered to Practicing
Mediators Only)
Regulatory Negotiations is a process in which
those who will be affected by a regulation sit
down with a government agency to write a
proposed rule or regulation by consensus.
Experience has shown that by bringing potential
or even actual antagonists into participation in
a public process, they become invested in
helping the agency solve its problem. The result
is usually better regulation and because those
who will be regulated have taken part in the
process, the likelihood of subsequent challenges
are greatly reduced.
The Sessions:
This three-day workshop is for practitioners who
want specific insight into how to expand their
practice to include resolving multi party and
public policy issues involving federal, state or
local government, and techniques for
facilitating these processes. This workshop
examines how multi-party public policy disputes
are convened and facilitated through
Regulatory-Negotiations and similar approaches.
This process has been used many times since the
mid 1980's to resolve a variety of public policy
issues and is used regularly in resolving many
kinds of natural resource, environmental,
regulatory and complex multi party cases. The
workshop includes case studies and interactive
exercises in all phases of convening and
facilitating multi party public policy issues.
Substantial time will be spent on how to expand
and market your practice to provide these
services.
Audience:
This course is offered to practicing mediators
only. If you are interested in expanding your
practice to Federal, State and local governments
this course will teach you the skills and
provide you with suggestions on how to market
those skills. This course is taught only once
per year and is limited to 20 participants.
